Description
Starting life as an egg, soon the naidad becomes an active predator who swims by jet propulsion - squirting water out from the end of its abdomen. It may take several years to change into an adult dragonfly but its appetite remains voracious. The adult will eat almost any soft-bodied flying insect including mosquitoes, flies, butterflies and moths.
This lady flew through a spider web before landing to rest in my California garden. It's possible she's actually a California Darner but I've read her markings suggest otherwise.
