Description
Even with eyesight eight times as powerful as a human's, Red-tailed hawks don't fly at night.
When the sun drops below the horizon, they take refuge in the dense foliage of tall trees. At dawn, they begin patrolling grasslands and marshy habitats for an unlucky field mouse or other small rodent.
The Red-tailed hawk's breeding range extends from central Alaska through Canada and across the entire United States, south through Mexico and into Central America. In contrast to most species, Buteo jamaicensis populations have actually increased over the last 40 years.
