Description
(When exploring tide pools, please tread carefully, thanks.)
Even the slightest touch can trigger harpoon-like structures loaded with stinging cells into unsuspecting prey.
Anemones are powerful predators feeding on a variety of critters. They patiently wait, but once a target is identified, they extend their arms to draw it's immobilized meal in to it's waiting mouth. And when the anemone has finished digesting it's meal, it sends the creature back out the way it came. The mouth that swallowed it, expels it back out again.
This Giant Green Sea Anemone was discovered in Montana de Oro State Park on the central coast of California.
