Having one of the most conspicuous and elaborate courtship displays, Clark's grebes will stretch their necks, bob their heads and dive to collect pieces of weeds they use to build their nest. Then the couple face each other with aquatic vegetation in their bills. They rise up vertically, their feet in constant motion, necks extended and bills rising upward, and then begin spiral movements around one another, their bills gracefully turning as they pivot around their partner.
Males select the nest site and feed the brooding mama. One parent will raise chicks on their back while the other feeds their chicks for about a month. Clark's grebes are found breeding throughout much of the western United States and the inland areas of Mexico.
I photographed this wild bird at sunrise under a bright orange sky caused by wildfire smoke near the coast in central California.
Like many autistics, I think in pictures - images are my words, ideas and stories. Every photograph I take tells a story which I'm excited to share. My researched descriptions are meant to support and define every photo I offer. Thanks for browsing my ever-growing gallery.
