Description
Pulsing in a distinctive, staccato-like rhythm - drifting on currents - carefree with no where to go. Some would envy the life of a jelly.
Blue Blubber jellies (jellyfish) do not have to rely entirely on zooplankton for food. They feed themselves through a symbiotic relationship they maintain with unicellular algae living inside them.
Although the Blue Blubber Jelly (Catostylus mosaicus) has many predators (all seven species of sea turtles, tuna, sunfish, butterfish, spiny dogfish) those larger animals are in decline so jelly populations are growing. With most species in decline this sounds like good news but their huge swarms have wreaked havoc with power stations and have clogged ship intakes.
Blue Blubber Jellies enjoy the warm, shallow lagoons and coasts of eastern and northern Australia and are popular with aquarists.
