Description
Ghosts, apparitions and specters haunt the rooms and corridors of the historic Montreal City Hall. With depraved, miserable, tortured souls drifting in from the neighboring infamous Montreal Prison, there's little peace in the seat of the city's government.
Hidden from public view, under Place Vauquelin beside City Hall, are dark dungeons where prisoners rotted in vermin-infested cells of horror awaiting execution.
Conveniently located behind the exquisitely decorated Ville de Montréal Municipal Administration Building (City Hall) is the Champ-de-Mars whose sloping geography made for excellent viewing during exciting public events. Men, women, and children gathered by the thousands to enjoy a picnic lunch and cheer while dozens of severally abused prisoners were hanged.
Montreal City hall was constructed in 1872-1878 and rebuilt after a fire in 1922. It's Second Empire style is evident in the steep, metal-clad mansard roofs, extensive use of dormers to enliven the roofline, and its symmetrical façade. The architecture used springcourses to divide each story, and rich elaborations including the double-height, columned portico, central clock, elaborate chimneys, and domed cupola. Inside are elaborately decorated marble halls with magnificent, luxuriant decor. Listen carefully and you might hear the clanking chains, disembodied screams and desperate cries coming from the restless dead.
