Description
Humpback whales are known for their distinctive, knobby heads, long white fins and haunting songs. So it was a great surprise when they came to Avila Beach, California, to feed only a few meters away from the public pier. I, along with delighted crowds, watched for hours while several whales fed nearby.
While "lunge feeding" Humpback whales will plow through concentrated areas of fish with their huge mouths open. They swell with the large quantities of their food mixed with seawater. Their prey, small schooling fish, jump into the air to avoid being swallowed.
