Description
Jellyfish have drifted along on ocean currents for millions of years, even before dinosaurs roamed primal Earth.
These jellylike creatures pulse along on ocean currents with red stinging tentacles and oral arms extending far below their 12" (30cm) bell. Pacific Sea Nettles (Chrysaora fuscescens) are large jellyfish most commonly found preying on other jellies along the coasts of California and Oregon. Despite their sting (which is painful to humans but rarely dangerous), sea nettles are eaten by sea turtles, as well as several species of large fish and marine birds.
This beauty was photographed at the Steinhart Aquarium, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California.
