Description
Walruses are among the strangest living mammals. They feed on animals that live on or in the sea floor. Their large tusks are used in fighting, cutting through ice, hooking over ice for stability while sleeping, and helping to pull its body out of the water.
These walruses were resting on drift ice in the Bering Sea near Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska before the LA County Natural History Museum added them to their permanent diorama exhibit. These works of art inspired my childhood interest in zoology.
