Description
On an early misty, winter morning, a Ferruginous Hawk rests a moment before continuing it's hunt.
A large hawk with a wing span up to 60 inches/152 cm, Ferruginous Hawks (Buteo regalis) are skilled at swooping down then leveling out to catch their prey. On this foggy morning, this hawk is ready to catch a careless critter for breakfast.
Hawks often arrive from Washington state to overwinter in Central California. Although the IUCN isn't concerned about their population, Washington state has declared the species endangered. Photographed at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge, Merced, California.
