Description
The Neo-Classical dry-goods warehouse at the corner of Granville and George Streets is one of the earliest remaining stone buildings around the Province House square, Halifax. --Built in 1841, renown architect David Sterling added a floor to the Kenny warehouse in 1863. Then after a devastating block fire in 1912 gutted the building, the new headquarters of the Halifax Herald newspaper was renovated. The iconic harbor-town building had it's structural integrity reinforced and three new stories, designed by George Henry Jost, were added.
Today, 1740 Granville Street is undergoing another transformation. This one it's most ambitious yet. The 182 year old historic building will have it's seven-story granite and brick facade, including all identified character defining elements, maintained but all else will be transformed into a multi-purpose modern structure. A mix of history and progress will greet all who visit downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
